And the shots we’d collectively envisioned the night before unfolded like clockwork as the warm sun painted the flanks of the blast zone.

I snapped this gem at the beginning of pandemic. We left Hood River, OR for St Gearge, UT, just as the pandemic started to hit; and shit got real in the US a couple days into our spring break. Shelter in place orders back home, etc. We debated pulling the plug & bailing for home, but ultimately opted to stay the course, theorizing that we were just as capable of sheltering/isolating in our rented condo as we were at home, and while we did see a few people out on the trails, everyone was being just as respectful in regards to keeping a safe distance as we were. Ultimately, I think it was one of the better family vacations we ever had. We had a lot of laughs, we rode a lot of great trails, and—in general—had a damn good time. Minus the completely gripped drive in a spring snowstorm on the way home. I could do without that bs ever again!

The story of this shot is an illustration in miscommunication. As a Worldcup Shooter (well, retired nowadays) you always hit a race with five clients, minimum. In that kind of arena, the potential for mixed messages is legion without proper communication between you and your clients. In this case, I was working for two clients who sponsored Sam. Long story short: one client selected it for an ad but forgot to tell me. They made Sam’s saddle. But they also made tires. The other selected it for their catalog cover and DID tell me. They made tires. Client 1, though, was their competition.
.
Well, the ad (fortunately!) appeared before the catalog went to press. Barely. However, I got a VERY pissed off call from client 2 just after I landed from a red eye flight to learn l was on the hook for a cover shot for their catalog. After a seriously stress filled (and abruptly caffeine fueled) morning, we got it sorted out. But my name was on a shitlist for a long, long time.

Moral of the story? Keep in constant and clear communication with the important people in your life. It keeps the stress level low. #dramafree #getitinwriting #tequilaismycoffee #oopsiedaisy

Yesterday I posted a #throwback image of the first time I met my now wife. Ironically enough, today is the ninth anniversary of our first date (which happened about 6 months after that initial meeting). I think the ten images I’ve pulled while scanning my archives tell a pretty damn good story of how things have gone since that first date…everything from mad adventures all over the world (although mostly just in the USA) with her, her mini tornadoes, our Hungarian dingo, and our latest adventure minion: Madoc. I couldn’t be more stoked on life, never mind the ALS. Honorable mentions to the shitsky (our labradoodle) and our calico cat, both a big part of our family and our adventures, but not pictured here.

#throwbackthursday to a somewhat fateful day. Back in October 2013, a badly burned out me did a shoot for Diamondback Bikes in the Hood River area. I’d been home that year for only 17 days between the middle of March thru September 25. Burned out, but you gotta make hay when the work is there. So I undertook a two day shoot with cobbled together talent and unknown locations. Somehow I landed this gem of a shot (as well as many others) with this diamond in the rough model/mountain biker named @nikkirohan_

First off, my lovely stepdaughter @hazelh_nut celebrated her splash down into being a teenager last week—that’s her creating a marshmallow mess for a birthday cake for her & her friends.

Second up is my stepson @hudson_forrest stepping into high school as well as stepping up his jump jam game on his bike. Not to mention today is his 15th lap around the sun! So proud of this kid!
.
Last? Ringing in a month and a day of being a father to little Madoc Meagher, the newest edition here in my home!

I met Aaron Turner years before his ALS journey be

I met Aaron Turner years before his ALS journey began. He was the straight talking, crusty but immensely kind hearted mechanic every bike shop has. We talked shit. He ridiculed some of my adventures and gear choices. I poked fun at his utter and complete lack of fashion. Somehow, despite our differences, we forged a friendship. Not a super close one, but one of deep mutual respect—although we’d still poke fun at each other.
.
When Aaron got his diagnosis, he reached out to me. And we became closer. In many ways we inspired each other to be better, to live more meaningful lives, and to savor what we have.
.
Yesterday, Aaron took his final breath, surrounded by friends & family who loved him and whom he loved in turn. It was a fitting ending, although far, far too soon for a person of his caliber.
.
I offer up a simple toast to his immense soul. Life is too short. Enjoy every moment. LIVE every moment. Like Aaron. Rest In Peace. You will be missed. #fuckals
